Skill Poker Index: What They Are and How They Work

In the first article of this series we asked the fundamental question: is Texas Hold’em poker a sport or gambling? We saw how variance dominates live tournaments and why mathematical probability alone is not enough. The Skill Poker Index (SPI) were created to answer this problem.

What Are the Skill Poker Index

The Skill Poker Index are a set of percentage indicators. They determine the partial distribution of the pot based on the skills involved in each specific phase of the spot.

This is not a modification of Texas Hold’em rules. The cards remain the same. Blind levels advance normally. The SPI act exclusively on the pot assignment mechanism in case of all-in and consequent show down before the river.

An Interdisciplinary Approach

The creation of the SPI required an interdisciplinary scientific study based on an inductive approach. Mathematics — which traditionally dominates the discipline — played an instrumental role. Communication theories allowed the reworking of two pillars of poker literature.

The first is the “Fundamental Theorem of Poker” by David Sklansky [1987], which attributes informational primacy to the individual components of the deck. The second is the chip utility concept by Arnold Snyder [2008], which measures the competitiveness of the available stack.

Guiding the development of the model was the Feature Semantics of Danish linguist Hjelmslev. This tool allows the linguistic code of poker to be broken down into its elementary informational units and quantified progressively in each phase of the spot.

Why an Interdisciplinary Approach

Live poker is a complex communicative environment. During a live tournament every player accesses a significantly greater amount of information than online. This information is not only mathematical. It concerns verbal and non-verbal language, behaviors, and the timing and intensità of opponents’ reaction.

Mathematical probability is not equipped to handle this dimension. Communication sciences are. It is this integration that makes the SPI a new and scientifically grounded tool.

The Empirical Tournament

To test the effectiveness of the SPI in the field, a dedicated freeroll tournament is planned. The field will be composed half of professional players and half of enthusiasts. The goal is to observe the indices in action in a live competition and collect empirical data in support of the model.

Tournament information will be available in advance to newsletter subscribers.

A Step Toward Sports Recognition

The Skill Poker Index represent the first objective tool capable of measuring the degree of skill involved in the critical phases of a live tournament. They combine mathematics, semiotics, philosophy of language and communication theories into a coherent and applicable model.

In the next article we will address the theoretical foundations of the journey: what is meant by game, what by sport, and where Texas Hold’em poker stands today in this continuum.
