The fundamental theorem of poker is the most quoted formulation in poker literature, and it has always been read as a rule of strategy. But the moment you take seriously the definition of information we arrived at in the previous article, that same formulation can be reread in structural terms: no longer advice on how to play, but a statement about what determines the outcome of a spot. It is from this rereading that the new tournament model draws two of its premises.

Why information in poker cannot be pinned down
That definition carries an uncomfortable consequence with it, and it is the point everything else starts from: in poker, information cannot be pinned down.
Not because it is missing or kept hidden. The reason runs deeper, and it has to do with the heterogeneity of the meanings each player can attribute to the information they receive. Two opponents watch exactly the same event at the table and draw two different readings from it.
A precise limit follows, and it concerns the object before the method: information to which different players assign different values cannot be handled as an exact figure, and so no precise mathematical analysis of it is possible.
How information turns into a move
If information cannot be pinned down once and for all, what remains to be understood is what players do with it. The study calls this passage the communicative dynamic, and describes it as a process that never stops for the whole duration of the spot.
It works like this. Every subject involved continuously relaunches cognitive activities which, as if in a vortex, keep processing the available information through a system made of inferences and filters. You infer, you discard, you go back and infer again on the result you have just obtained. It is the principle of self-empowerment brought inside the table.
The process has a stated destination: to extract the meaning closest to empirical reality in the here and now. Not the true meaning in absolute terms, which for what has just been said does not exist, but the one that comes closest to what is happening in this particular spot.
And it has a sequel, which is why it matters: that result is translated into the strategies that follow from it. The objective, in a tournament, always stays the same: to take as many chips as possible from the opponent and eliminate them.

The framework just described makes it possible to do something poker literature had not yet managed: to reformulate in structural terms a theory that until today had been developed exclusively in strategic terms. This is not an exercise in reading: it is the step that makes it possible to develop the new professional tournament model the study proposes. The theory is the fundamental theorem of poker, stated by David Sklansky in 1987.
Every time you play a hand differently from the way you would have played it if you could see all your opponents’ cards, they gain; and every time you play your hand the same way you would have played it if you could see all their cards, they lose.

The statement continues symmetrically, with the roles reversed: every time your opponents play differently from the way they would have played seeing your cards, you gain; and every time they play exactly as they would have played knowing them, you lose.
What Sklansky says without saying it
Seen from the structural perspective of the tournament rather than the strategic one, the theorem states something its author never declares openly. Entirely implicitly, Sklansky highlights how much deep knowledge of information weighs on success in the empirical phase.
And yet the work, guided by that same theory, develops in a completely different direction: it elaborates mathematical concepts and the strategies that follow from them, without ever naming or drawing on the scientific disciplines concerned with communication. The informational premise stays in the background, never brought into focus.
This is exactly the space the study steps into: taking that implicit premise and bringing it to the foreground.
The two premises the model inherits
Sklansky’s theory becomes necessary to the study because it hands it two basic premises.
The first grants the individual components of the deck — the cards, one by one — informational primacy over everything that unfolds in the spot. It is the premise the Skill Poker Index model inherits directly.
The second concerns conduct: knowledge of the information has to be paired with a conduct of decision-making processes consistent with successful strategies. Knowing, on its own, is not enough.
On this second point the poker community is particularly sensitive. Every theorist deals with tilt and insists on the importance of a discipline that protects results. Tilt is the condition in which the emotional state takes over from rationality, leading to a style of play far from the optimal expected value.
