At the root of online poker skills lies a solid capacity for handling large numbers. Alongside it come speed of calculation and speed of data processing. These are not three independent requirements: they all point in the same direction, Expected Value.
It is the typical approach of anyone who comes to online play with a professional orientation, treating the game as a competitive and professional activity. What separates such a player from the casual one is not knowledge of the rules. It is the way those skills are organised and put to work toward a measurable objective. In the previous article we saw why the very definition of skill is the knot on which the sporting recognition of the discipline turns. Here we go down to the operational level: we look at how those skills are actually exercised.
EV: the online player’s compass
EV stands for Expected Value. The concept is borrowed from financial economics: it expresses a weighted average, the mean value that comes closest to reality.
It is the value the entire professional approach to online play is oriented toward: calculation and data-processing skills exist to feed it. That value can come out positive or negative, and it is on that sign that the player bases their choices. The probability calculation is simpler than the acronym suggests. Multiply the favourable probabilities by the size of the pot. Multiply the unfavourable probabilities by the bet to be paid. Then subtract the second product from the first. If the result is positive the decision pays over the long run, if it is negative it costs. Everything an online professional does with data serves, in the end, to answer this question.
The first path: selecting data and calculating equity
The distinction between the two paths is not a theoretical construction: it comes from close observation of how the professional online player works. The first of the two is quantitative and is measured on three parameters: the ability, quality and speed with which the player manages, in statistical terms, to select the most relevant data. Selection comes before calculation, and is already a skill in itself. Few of the data in a spot really count, and recognising them quickly is what makes the calculation possible.
On that basis the opponent’s range is built: the set of combinations the opponent may hold. It is inferred from their position at the table and their playing habits. At that point the calculation becomes possible. The player assesses the equity of their own perceived range against the opponent’s range in relation to the board. From there comes the expected value against the pot.
Ability, quality and speed carry weight together. In the study, speed is not an accessory to the calculation but one of the three parameters by which this skill is defined.
The second path: the critical interpretation of data
The second path is measured on the same three parameters — ability, quality and speed — but applied to a different activity: critical analysis. Here it is no longer a matter of producing numbers, but of working on the data the first path has already delivered.
The study gives a precise measure of it. It is the quality and degree of the relationships the player manages to develop among those data, attributing meaning to them. Two players can hold exactly the same data and draw different readings from it. What separates them is not the data itself, but the web of relationships they manage to establish between one piece of data and the next.
It is worth stressing: this interpretive capacity is not exclusive to live play. The study places it among the skills of the professional online player, alongside calculation and on the same level.
The stated goal is precise: to identify, develop and exploit small edges in favour of one’s own objectives.

It is why there is little sense in asking which of the two matters more. The first path produces the data, the second puts it into relation: separated, they lose the function that makes them useful.
It is also the reason why online play remains the training ground the great majority of today’s live professionals come from. There, the high frequency of play builds, as a natural consequence, a solid habit.
